Losing the Bait

Posted on 2022-12-16 by Michael

This is a story from childhood that involves a simple mistake that led to a lifelong regret.

My parents were good friends with another couple, the Drabicks. The Drabick’s had a cottage up north in Algonquin Park north of where we lived in Ontario, Canada.

The Drabicks invited our family to join their family for a vacation up at their cottage.

So we loaded up our stuff into our car, picked up a bunch of groceries and followed them up to their cottage and had an enjoyable time, except for one simple mistake…

We were out on their boat collecting minnows with a net to use as bait. The minnows were collected after hours of collecting and put in a metal container that hung from the boat. The minnows were being kept alive in this container until they would be used for fishing.

Somehow I touch something or moved a lever, or something and the minnows escaped causing us to have to start over catching the minnows. I felt so bad that I made everyone work so hard and then have to start over. They forgave me – a simple mistake – but I never forgave myself.

Drabick’s Boat

A funny thing happened a couple of years ago.My brother and I were talking at our niece’s wedding and that incident somehow came up in conversation. I think we were talking about regrets. My brother mentioned that he had made that mistake of releasing the minnows. I quickly corrected him and told him I had done it, not him.

‘Turns out, we both had been living with this regret. We both thought we had done the mistake and had lived with the regret all those years.

At this point I have to be honest, either I did it or I somehow I vicariously covered for my brother.

The truth is that there never was any evidence that either of us did it. They asked if anyone moved the lever and I said I thought I may have done so.

How crazy to think we both held on to that regret for so many years and it wasn’t even anything worth regretting…

Forsaking All

Posted on 2022-11-03 by Michael

Let’s start by telling you that on January 7, 1976 I was born again and joined a non-denominational Christian organization in Canada.

Part of joining the organization was to forsake all. This was a source of income for the group as it would give them items they otherwise couldn’t afford to buy. If they didn’t have a need for the things you forsook they would sell them at garage sales and raise funds for the organization.

So I decided to join and part of that process was to forsake all my possessions.

What possessions did I have? I still lived at home with my parents but I had a set of used Ludwig drums, a couple of guitars, a Yamaha component stereo system, an old Ford Falcon car, a ten speed bike, and some books. Non of these items were cheap. I worked hard to get them…

A pic of me in ’76 in Montreal, soon after joining

When I was told I had to forsake all if I wanted to join, not just my possessions but that it was a total commitment – I was going to have to give up my life if I wanted to start a new one… I said ‘Yes.’

So I went home with one of the brothers that recruited me and we loaded up my beat up Ford Falcon with all my possessions and were going to take them to my new home. Unfortunately, the car had a problem with the gear shift. I hadn’t driven it for a while and that day, in the middle of a snow storm, wouldn’t cooperate and I couldn’t get it out of the driveway at my parents house.

We ended up getting a taxi instead so that was an ordeal but it was alright because I had no qualms about forsaking all. I was determined to give away my past life in exchange for a new one that had purpose and meaning…

Grandfather Again

Posted on 2022-10-29 by Michael

I am a grandfather again!

Today, October 28, 2022 my daughter Becca in Italy had a baby boy and called him Christian.

He weighed in at 3.5 kg and is healthy and a very calm baby!

This is Becca’s third child. The previous two are girls, named Chiara and Chloe. Now we have a third with a name starting with Ch (Christian).

Following are some pics of Christian at the hospital:

My daughter Becca is doing well and will return home after 48 hrs observation.

Today is a good day and Christian’s birth is a cause for celebration!
